The ambition of Duplicata is to propose fabrics and manufacturing exclusively European. After looking for our future manufacturers in numerous countries, France, Portugal, Romania, Spain, we found the one that answered our every need : Lithuania.
So this week, we left our Parisian studio to go in this central Baltic state to prepare with our factories the production of our precious dresses. During our stay, we travelled across the countryside to find their workshop, not without some difficulties. Forests as far as your eyes can see, between rivers and lakes, multicolored wooden houses and a strong Russian feeling… it’s hard hard not to fall in love.
We chose to stay in the capital, Vilnius, which has the largest historic center in Western Europe, and we luckily had some time to discover the capital. After a walk in the little paved streets, we started climbing the Gediminas hill overhanging the city to admire the view. We were impressed by the extent of the old town, but also by the unstoppable expansion of new districts.
The legend says that Vilnius has been built in this strategic place after that Grand Duke Gediminas had dreamt of a giant iron wolf howling from the top of the hill. The pagan priest declared that the wolf represented the future construction of a castle and a town that would become the Lithuanian capital, and its glory would spread all around the world…
After a detour at the Dukes’ palace, at the foot of the hill, we visited the National History Museum, tracing the history of the country since its creation in 1320. There, you can discover, amongst other things, traditional Lithuanian costumes and a reconstruction of a house from the 18th century, that was exposed during the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900.
Vilnius is a perfect destination for romantic getaway or a city break with your friends, at less than 3 hours from Paris. You will discover a sumptuous mix of baroque and Gothic architecture and taste the local specialties like the Cepelinai, those potato quenelles stuffed with a meat preparation that will warm you up during the northern winter.
